Fassnidge Park is a town centre park, and that fact governs nearly everything a pet session there can be. Its edges are roads and shopfronts rather than farmland, the playground moves children through it steadily, and the boating lake draws waterfowl and other dogs alike, so whether a lead is unclipped becomes a judgement about one specific animal rather than a policy about the park. A dog with dependable recall can be photographed at full tilt on the open green early, before the shopping crowd and the pushchairs arrive. A dog that fixes on children, or one that would be swimming within seconds of freedom, does better on a long lead held outside the picture, or at home on carpet it has known for years, and that is a conversation for the booking rather than a discovery on the day. Coat colour settles the exposure. Dark dogs against bright summer turf are the awkward case: the grass is luminous, the fur holds no visible detail, and a camera left to average the scene will split the difference and reduce the animal to a cut-out. We meter from the fur, accept a background running hot, and bring the grass back afterwards, which is straightforward; detail never recorded in a black coat cannot be conjured later. Overcast is the friend here. Elderly animals get the abbreviated version, on surfaced ground near a gate, with no running and a finish that arrives before their enthusiasm does.
