Open parkland changes what a dog session needs more than the dog's temperament does. Swakeleys Park has long sightlines, which is precisely why an unreliable recall becomes a problem here rather than a detail: there is nothing in the way of an animal that decides to keep going. The working answer is a long training line, kept loose so it does not pull the head round, and taken out of the picture afterwards. A trailing line can be edited away. A dog halfway across a park cannot be photographed at all. The second thing open ground decides is exposure, and it catches out anyone with a black or very dark dog. Grass and a bright sky push the meter up, and the coat then records as an outline with nothing inside it. The fix is to expose for the coat and accept that the grass goes a stop brighter than it looked. A slightly hot background is a fair trade for a face that still has eyes and a wet nose in it. Overcast weather does the same job for nothing. Older animals and anxious ones set their own limits and we work to them. A stiff dog is photographed where it already stands rather than walked into position, and a wary one is given time to lose interest in us before a camera goes anywhere near its eye line. Anything that is not a dog stays indoors on its own territory instead.
