Swakeleys Park is the ground a sitting in Ickenham is usually built around, and the useful thing about it is that it is open. Open ground has nothing overhead to filter the light and nothing at the sides to throw it back, so under a bright sky the sun arrives straight down and leaves the eye sockets dark. That single property decides the calendar here. Midsummer in the middle of the day is the worst version of it. A flat grey sky is the best, because cloud turns the whole sky into one large soft source and the shadow under the brow fills on its own. Winter is better than its reputation for exactly the reason July is difficult: the sun stays low, so it comes in at face height instead of from above, and a late morning in January can be the kindest hour of the year here. Swakeleys House offers the other kind of background. Jacobean brick is warm, dark and full of small detail, so it wants to be used from some distance with the aperture open, or the gables start competing with the face. It also settles the wardrobe question. Warm reds, rust and orange sink into that brick and vanish; mid blue, charcoal, deep green and cream separate from it cleanly. Being Grade I listed, it is not a building anyone should treat as a free backdrop, so we establish what is permitted before a session is planned around it rather than turning up and hoping.
