Ruislip Woods lies north of South Ruislip, and what decides whether a sitting there works is that it is ancient woodland rather than planted parkland. A closed canopy in full leaf does not dim the ground evenly; it breaks light into hard patches, so a face walking a path gains and loses two stops within a few strides. From late spring the workable ground is the margin, where the trunks give an even dark backing and daylight reaches a face sideways rather than dropping onto it. Winter turns that argument over: with the branches bare the interior takes light from the sky, trunks read as vertical lines rather than one black mass, and paths that were hopeless in July photograph clean. South Ruislip itself is residential, which supplies a second background needing no travel at all. Brick, hedge and painted door sit in a narrow band of mid tones, and a face set against that has nothing competing for attention. That narrowness is also the clothing rule. Bright white burns out to blank paper against dark bark and dull brick alike, and black collapses into an outline under trees. Mid greens, greys, navy and warm neutrals keep their detail in front of both. On a flat, overcast day we would take the woodland margin. On a hard bright one, the residential streets early or late, sitter turned away from the sun and the face filled in from the front.
