For South Ruislip

A portrait photographer for South Ruislip

A sitting takes roughly an hour once we start, which is enough for two backgrounds and a change of top without rushing anybody. Where the room allows it we shoot to a laptop, so frames get looked at on the way through and the plan can change while it still costs nothing.

You pick from a private gallery afterwards. Chosen frames are retouched by hand, spots and stray hairs only, and everything else arrives corrected and sized both for printing and for screens.

Why choose us

Trusted with portraits across Greater London

Small groups are built from the back row forward, heights staggered rather than lined up, so nobody is hidden and every face receives the same quality of light. Sitting on the front edge of a chair rather than back into it keeps the spine long and the posture alert, a trick used in nearly every seated portrait here.

Hair and clothing are checked before each lighting change, since a twisted strap or a folded collar is far easier to correct than it is to retouch. A sitting usually covers two or three lighting setups, with the safest and most flattering taken first so that everything after it can afford to be experimental.

Good to know

Portrait Photographer in South Ruislip, FAQs

Yes, and in South Ruislip there are two locations worth using. The woodland to the north gives a dark, even background at its margin, which is the better choice on a dull day. The residential streets give brick and hedge, and they earn their keep on a bright morning with the sun still low. We carry lighting to either, so neither one depends on the sky behaving.

At Northwood, seamless paper in white, grey or charcoal, lit with softboxes and a separate head on the background itself. On location the background is fixed for us, so the effort goes into controlling it: a long lens to throw a South Ruislip street or the trees out of focus, and flash through an umbrella to keep the face brighter than whatever is behind it.

The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6. From South Ruislip that stays inside the same borough rather than being a run into London, which matters most in winter, when the studio is where a portrait gets made at all. Through the warmer months most sittings here are outdoors, and the room simply waits in case the day turns.

Of course, and nearly everyone who visits us in South Ruislip or the studio says the very same thing. We keep things relaxed and unhurried, offer clear, gentle direction and ease you in gradually. After a few minutes most people settle, and the portraits look natural rather than stiff.

Mid tones. The backgrounds in South Ruislip are dark bark and dull brick, and bright white in front of either pulls the eye straight off your face, while black loses its shape entirely. Plain beats patterned, since fine checks and stripes break up at a distance. Bring one change of top in another tone if you want two looks; swapping takes a minute.

Ruislip Woods lies north of South Ruislip, and what decides whether a sitting there works is that it is ancient woodland rather than planted parkland. A closed canopy in full leaf does not dim the ground evenly; it breaks light into hard patches, so a face walking a path gains and loses two stops within a few strides. From late spring the workable ground is the margin, where the trunks give an even dark backing and daylight reaches a face sideways rather than dropping onto it. Winter turns that argument over: with the branches bare the interior takes light from the sky, trunks read as vertical lines rather than one black mass, and paths that were hopeless in July photograph clean. South Ruislip itself is residential, which supplies a second background needing no travel at all. Brick, hedge and painted door sit in a narrow band of mid tones, and a face set against that has nothing competing for attention. That narrowness is also the clothing rule. Bright white burns out to blank paper against dark bark and dull brick alike, and black collapses into an outline under trees. Mid greens, greys, navy and warm neutrals keep their detail in front of both. On a flat, overcast day we would take the woodland margin. On a hard bright one, the residential streets early or late, sitter turned away from the sun and the face filled in from the front.
