For Ruislip Manor
Sittings run to a short list of set positions rather than a long wander, and we say what is working while there is still light left to act on it. Nobody is asked to perform; most of the usable frames come out of the gaps between instructions.
The edited pictures reach you in a private gallery afterwards, one set heavy enough for printing and a lighter set cut down for screens. Retouching removes what was temporary that week and leaves what is permanently yours.

What we offer
Sittings on the wooded ground north of Ruislip Manor, with the Northwood room used when the canopy defeats the light.
Clothing tones agreed before the day, so nothing you wear disappears into a background made of bark and shadow.
One sitter or two, adults or teenagers, with the frames you choose retouched by hand and not by slider.
Twenty-five years behind the lens
Backdrops and lighting are changed through the session, giving you a mix of clean studio looks and softer, moodier frames. We work at your pace, taking breaks and changes of outfit in our stride, so the session never feels like a production line.
A range of album styles is available, hand-finished and designed around the portraits you love most. Fine prints, framed portraits and canvases are produced to a high standard, ready to hang at home or at work.

Good to know
Because the plan exists before the day does. In Ruislip Manor it means working at the boundary of the woodland to the north instead of deep inside it, which keeps the green cast off skin and makes the trees a background rather than a lid. Clothing tones are agreed against that background in advance, and the Northwood room stands by for a wet afternoon.
Either works. We travel out to Ruislip Manor and photograph at your house or on the wooded ground north of it. The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 is the alternative, and it is worth choosing when the ground is soaked, the afternoon light has gone, or you want a background that owes nothing to your own decor. Say which when you book.
Yes, and sparingly. Whether your session is in Ruislip Manor or at Northwood, we remove only fleeting distractions like a loose hair or blemish, keeping your natural skin, lines and character intact. The result is a flattering, honest portrait that looks like you, not a heavily retouched picture.
Yes. We photograph portraits of every age, and are patient and gentle with younger sitters, shaping the pace of the session around them. Whether it is a single child, a couple portrait or a group, we keep the mood light so the results feel natural and warm. Outdoors in Ruislip Manor we would head for Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve, ancient woodland close to the north.
After your Ruislip Manor session you receive a gallery of carefully edited portraits to pick your favourites from. From there you can order fine prints, framed pieces, canvases and hand-finished albums, or simply keep the digital images. Our editing is light and natural, so you always look yourself.

The woodland to the north is ancient rather than planted, and the working difference between the two is the height and the closure of the canopy. From full leaf until it drops, the floor sits in continuous shade, and light that does get down to a face has passed through leaves, so it arrives carrying a green cast. Skin drifts towards that cast, and olive, sage and khaki clothing doubles it, which is why a July sitting under the trees wants warm cloth and not green. Through the leafed months the better plan is to work where the trees stop. Open sky overhead removes the cast entirely and turns the wood into a background instead of a lid, which is why clothing here should run lighter than people assume. Bark, leaf litter and shadow all sit at the dark end of the scale, so a mid-brown coat in front of them reads as one mass with no edge to it, while cream, oatmeal, rust and warm grey all separate cleanly. Winter reverses the whole calculation. With the leaves down, light reaches the ground, the wood photographs open and graphic, and the green cast has gone with the leaves that caused it, so December and January are the months when a sitting can go in among the trees rather than beside them. The suburb's own brick is the other resource. Interwar brick is a warm red, and on a sunlit residential street it returns that warmth into the shadowed half of a face, which is a gentler fill than any reflector we could hold up.
