Ruislip Manor is residential almost the whole way through, and that is where the local headshot problem starts, because the obvious place to take one is a front room. Interwar houses put a bay on the front elevation, and a bay is a wide, low, three-sided window. It is a great deal of daylight, which is why people try to use it, and it is the wrong shape for a head: three planes of glass send light in from three directions at once, so there is no single direction to model against, and the face lands bright and structureless. Depth is the second problem. These front rooms are shallow and the ceilings are low, so a sitter finishes up close to the wall behind and throws a shadow onto it. Neither fault is repaired by a better camera or a brighter day. Both are repaired by choosing the direction the light arrives from, which is the entire argument for a room kept for the purpose. Our room in Northwood is inside the same borough, and the Metropolitan line linking the two already calls at this station, so getting there is a diary question rather than a logistics one. What that buys is light with one direction, a background chosen instead of inherited, and a written record of how it was set, which is what allows somebody photographed a year later to match the people already in place rather than merely resemble them at a glance.
