You do not get to choose the ceremony room. It belongs to an institution, its windows face wherever they were built to face, and its carpet will throw colour up under every chin in the hall. Adaptation is the whole job in that building. We read it on arrival, find the two positions that will not put a back in anyone's line, and then stay put in them.
The second building is yours to pick, and picking it carefully beats any amount of equipment. A reception room with height and pale walls hands you soft light for nothing. A dark one costs an hour of rigging you could have spent on people. An awkward seam runs between them. That seam is where a day most easily slips. Everyone sits down. Eye level drops to about a metre, and anyone photographing from standing height collects nothing but scalps. So we go low, keep well back, let a telephoto do the reaching, and never fire a flash into kirtan. Everything in that room is arranged around Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Which paths the sangat must not cross therefore sets our footprint, well before any lighting question arises. Ask the committee beforehand what a photographer is expected to do.
An audible clock runs through an anand karaj, which is a gift to anyone holding a camera. Every laav is sung first and walked second, so the raagis announce it in advance and you are already in position. A palla is placed early and holds across all four rounds. Outside, before any of that, the milni brings two families nose to nose for embraces lasting two seconds each. The doli then puts you in daylight, high contrast and tears; faces win and the sky goes white.

The 4.35-hectare Warrender Park began as part of the Highgrove Estate landscape park and was sold by Miss Eleanor Warrender in 1935 as a recreation ground, first called Eastcote Recreation Ground, and it adjoins High Grove woodland with parkland trees and a pond. 4
