Nobody gets to dress a gurdwara like a set. The hall was finished long before your date, its light arrives where the architect decided it would arrive, and no one is bringing a lamp inside. Treat that as good news. It deletes an entire category of decision from the morning and leaves three real ones: which side you sit on, which lens goes on the body, and the moment you stop moving. Four laavan, four different pictures
The four laavan are not four of the same thing. Each circuit opens with the ragis, and the singing sets a pace nobody hurries; the couple rise, walk and return, and the room's attention shifts a few degrees at every pass. Sitting low against one wall yields a different geometry each time; that is reason enough to pick a wall and hold it. Everything else in the hall is negotiable. What is not is that a camera stays underneath the Guru Granth Sahib.
The palla is the frame people ask about afterwards, and losing it is easy, because the cloth changes hands while every eye in the building is on faces. We watch hands. Ardas brings the hall upright, and the noise level announces the end before anything else can. Langar is where a day loosens: plates, floor, children, the first unguarded expressions since dawn. We keep working through it, at a distance, asking nobody to look up.
