Photographing the Anand Karaj in Redbridge

Redbridge is a green outer east London borough. Across Newham, Havering and the rest of Greater London, we cover the milni, the Anand Karaj and the reception with a careful eye. We photograph at gurdwaras, banqueting halls and marquees right across Greater London.

We understand the etiquette of the gurdwara and the vegetarian langar, and photograph within it with genuine respect. We are a reassuring, familiar presence in the gurdwara, so the sangat relax and the day flows naturally. We are at ease with large, multi-day Sikh celebrations and intimate gurdwara ceremonies alike.

We travel throughout Greater London for Anand Karaj ceremonies, and Redbridge, a green outer east London borough, is one we know well. We also photograph in nearby Richmond upon Thames and Ruislip Manor. We are at home at Redbridge-area venues such as The Willows, Crown Banqueting Suite and The Grove Banqueting.

A green outer east London borough formed in 1965 from Ilford and Wanstead and Woodford. Served by Redbridge station on the London Underground Central line, with nearby Gants Hill also on the Central line. When there is time for couple portraits, Valentines Park, a Green Flag park of around 130 acres, the borough's largest green space is a favourite, and Valentines Mansion, a restored house dating from around 1696 in Ilford makes a memorable setting.

From milni to the four laavan

We know the order of the Anand Karaj by heart, from the kirtan to the ardaas and the four laavan. For families holding a Sri Akhand Path, we photograph the continuous reading with quiet reverence. At the heart of a Sikh wedding is the Anand Karaj, the blissful union performed before the Guru Granth Sahib.

We photograph the sehra bandi, when the groom's turban and sehra are tied, with all its ceremony. We capture the family moments around the bride and groom, not just the rituals. The day often opens early with kirtan in the gurdwara, and we are there for it.
