Inside the gurdwara we work with great discretion, heads covered and shoes removed, never intruding on the kirtan. We read the rhythm of a Sikh celebration and are always in the right place for the milni, the laavan and the doli. We blend candid storytelling with a handful of timeless portraits taken away from the bustle of the gurdwara.

For portraits away from the celebration, Northala Fields, a park with four landmark conical hills beside the A40 works beautifully, and RAF Northolt, a Royal Air Force station that played a role in the Battle of Britain adds a real sense of place.

From milni to the four laavan

At the heart of a Sikh wedding is the Anand Karaj, the blissful union performed before the Guru Granth Sahib. The hukamnama, the reading taken after the laavan, closes the ceremony, and we capture it with respect. Heads covered and seated on the floor with the sangat, we photograph the laavan without ever intruding.

We capture the groom's arrival for the milni, surrounded by dancing family and the beat of the dhol. The doli, when the bride leaves her family home, is the most tender moment of the day. We document the sagai and the engagement that begin the journey, when families ask us.
