Southall

Southall's ten gurdwaras and London's largest Sikh community

Southall is home to London's largest Sikh community, and at the 2021 census Sikhs made up 28.5 per cent of the town. It has ten gurdwaras, among them the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, opened in 2003, described as one of the largest Sikh gurdwaras outside India and winner of the Ealing Civic Society Architectural Award in its opening year. Even the signs at Southall station, on the Elizabeth line, are in English and Gurmukhi.

For a Sikh couple in Southall, the wedding week can stay almost entirely within a few streets: the maiyan at home, outfits and gifts from the Broadway, the anand karaj at your gurdwara and a reception a short drive away. Kaushik is 6.5 miles away in Northwood, close enough for an early gurdwara start, and the Southall Sikh wedding page covers the town in more depth.

Ten gurdwaras in one town: planning the anand karaj in Southall

With ten gurdwaras in one town, a Southall wedding morning starts from a short list of possible addresses, all about 6.5 miles from the studio in Northwood. Send the time the kirtan begins, and Kaushik plans the drive and his arrival back from it, so he is in place before the couple walk around the Guru Granth Sahib for the first laav. If the reception is towards Hounslow, 9.5 miles from Northwood, the gap between the two sets the pace for the afternoon.

Each gurdwara committee sets its own guidance, and the ten in Southall will not all say the same thing. Ask your gurdwara what it allows during the laavan and the kirtan, and share the answer with Kaushik before the day. That way the four laavan, the giving of the palla and the karah parshad are all covered without anyone needing to stop and explain what comes next.

Our guide to photographing the anand karaj walks through each stage of the ceremony, and the national Sikh wedding photography page explains how the whole day is approached. Between them they cover the milni, the kirtan, the laavan and the ardas, and why each one sets the pace for the photographer in the darbar hall.

The morning

Milni at the gurdwara door, langar after the laavan

The gurdwara morning starts outside. The baraat arrives with its dhol, the milni pairs relatives from each family to greet each other with garlands, and only then does everyone go inside for the kirtan sung by the ragis. Send Kaushik the milni pairings in advance, so each embrace is caught in turn rather than lost in the crowd at the door.

After the laavan and the ardas comes the langar, one of the most telling parts of any Sikh wedding. Where the gurdwara welcomes photography there, Kaushik covers it quietly, with relatives sitting together on the floor. The gap between langar and the reception is often the only calm time in the day, and it is a good moment for couple portraits.

Around the wedding

Maiyan, jago and the doli across Ealing and Hounslow

The events around the anand karaj are as important as the ceremony. The maiyan and vatna at home, the mehndi night and the jago with its lit pots and singing all happen in the days before, and they can be held in family homes in Southall, Hounslow, Greenford or Northolt. Each is photographed very differently from the gurdwara: louder, closer and full of movement.

Hounslow, 9.5 miles from Northwood, is the most diverse town in its borough, with a large British Asian community, and receptions here and near Heathrow can run late. Wedding photography starts from £750. Packages are built around your day, and a second photographer can cover the stage and the bhangra floor together while Kaushik stays with the couple. The doli, the last event of the night, is photographed as it happens.

Registration and portraits

Registering the marriage and portraits by the Grand Union Canal

The anand karaj can be paired with a civil ceremony, on the same day or a different one. Ealing's register office holds its larger ceremonies in the Small Hall at The Brentham Club for up to 30 guests, with statutory ceremonies in room N5A at Perceval House. Hounslow's is at Feltham Lodge, where the Garden Room holds 30, and Brent's ceremony suite in Wembley holds up to 100.

For portraits, Southall has the canal on its doorstep. Three Bridges Park, created in 2013 beside the Grand Union Canal, has a wildflower meadow and views towards Brunel's Three Bridges, and the Hanwell flight of six locks, a scheduled monument, climbs the canal nearby. Travel from Northwood to the gurdwara, the portraits and the reception is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book. Town pages for Hounslow, Greenford and Ealing have more.

Planning

Planning around West London

01

Ask your gurdwara

Each of Southall's ten gurdwaras sets its own photography guidance. Ask yours before the day, so positions in the darbar hall are agreed in advance.

02

Send the milni pairings

A short list of which relatives greet each other at the milni means every garland and embrace at the gurdwara door is photographed.

03

Use the gap after langar

The quiet time between langar and the reception suits a short couple session by the canal at Three Bridges Park in Southall.

04

Plan the reception floor

At a large reception, a second photographer covers the stage and the bhangra floor together while Kaushik stays with the couple.
