Me and my heavily pregnant Fiancee visited here as a birthday gift from a friend of hers and had a LOVELY experience, Kaushik made us feel VERY welcomed and comfortable and we also had a good laugh. He was also very clear and precise with his instruction with regards to posing so we could get the best picture. Overall a very nice experience and would recommend.

The journey

Getting a one-year-old and a cake from West London to Northwood

The cake smash always runs at the studio, where the backdrop and props are kept. From Northolt or Greenford the drive is short enough to fit between breakfast and a late-morning nap. From a mansion flat in Kensington and Chelsea or a 1930s house on the Hanger Hill Garden Estate, the journey is longer, and the trick is to time it so your baby sleeps in the car seat on the way.

Carry the cake flat in its box on the floor of the car rather than on a lap, and keep a spare outfit and the wipes in an easy-to-reach bag. Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line is two minutes' walk from the door, though a pushchair, a cake and a change bag usually make the car simpler. There is parking close to the studio on Joel Street.

Distance and naps

Northolt to Kensington: matching the slot to the drive

Northolt is about 4 miles from Northwood and Greenford about 6, so a slot right after a morning nap is easy to reach. Ealing, Acton and Northfields fall at 7 to 9 miles, and Chiswick, Queen's Park, Kilburn and Fulham at about 10 to 11. From the far end, a baby who naps twice a day can sleep on the way there and again on the way home, which leaves the time at the studio for the cake.

Book the session for your baby's happiest hour, which is usually mid-morning after a nap and a snack rather than late afternoon, and count the drive back as part of the day. If your route crosses the Hanger Lane gyratory, where the A40 and the North Circular meet, leave more time than the map suggests, so the session does not start with a baby who has been awake in traffic.

The cake

Choosing the cake, and what else to pack

You bring the cake. Something soft and well frosted is easiest for small hands, and two or three colours keep the frame simple. Avoid hard decorations, check that every ingredient suits your baby, and order early from your baker if you want a particular design, so it is not being collected on the morning of a long drive.

Bring a change of clothes, plenty of wipes and a favourite toy, plus a smart outfit for the portraits before the cake comes out. A first birthday that falls near Diwali, Eid or Christmas is a natural moment to book a separate family session at home while everyone is visiting, with travel from Northwood set out in your written quote.

Family and friends

Grandparents, siblings and a follow-on session at the Bunny Park

Parents and older brothers and sisters can join the clean portraits before the cake comes out. In a three-generation household in Southall or Hounslow, the grandparents' picture with the birthday child can be the one the family treasures most, so plan it before the frosting flies. Older siblings sometimes want a turn at the cake too, which is worth agreeing in advance.

If the smash is followed by a first birthday party at home or in a local hall, ask about event photography for the party itself. A follow-on family session can also come to you, at home or in a park: Brent Lodge Park in Hanwell, the Bunny Park, has a play area and Hanwell Zoo's small animals, and Northala Fields in Northolt has two playgrounds for under-14s.

The first year

Rounding off a first year of pictures in West London

Holding the smash at the studio means the mess stays in Northwood rather than in your living room in Acton or Hammersmith. A cake smash also rounds off a first year of pictures that may have started with a newborn session and a maternity shoot, both of which can happen at your home, with travel from Northwood set out in writing before you book.

Our national cake smash photoshoot page explains the session in full. Later in the second year, when your child is walking, the West London family page covers sessions in parks such as Walpole Park in Ealing, with its Serpentine Lake and fountains, and Gunnersbury on the Ealing and Hounslow border.

Cake smash photoshoots in West London: questions answered

Around the first birthday, once your baby can sit unsupported. Because Greenford is about 6 miles from the Northwood studio and Ealing Broadway about 7.6, you can book close to the actual birthday rather than weeks before it.

Yes, please bring it. Check every ingredient suits your baby, avoid hard decorations, and keep a spare slice aside in case the first attempt ends up on the floor. A cake carried in its box on the car floor survives the drive from West London better than one on a lap.

Hammersmith and Fulham is about 10.7 miles from Northwood, usually a morning drive outside the rush hour. Book a slot after your baby's first nap, or one that lets them sleep in the car on the way. The smash itself takes place at the studio in Northwood Hills.

Yes. Parents, siblings and grandparents join the clean portraits at the studio before the cake comes out. Southall is about 6.5 miles from Northwood, and a separate family session at home or in a park around the first birthday is straightforward to plan as well.

Yes. A first birthday portrait session works without the smash, and the clean portraits at the start of every cake smash session are exactly that. Without the cake it can also be booked as a family session at home or in a park such as Walpole Park in Ealing.

Call or WhatsApp 07956 505383 and the cake smash price is given on request. If you add a family session at your home in Acton, Chiswick or Kilburn, the travel from Northwood is part of the same written quote.

Every session is photographed by Kaushik Bathia himself, FBIPP and FMPA, holder of five European Kodak Gold Awards, who opened the Northwood studio in 2001.
