Newborn and family photography in Kensington and Chelsea

Ninety minutes, of which the children are genuinely working for about thirty. We take whatever needs everyone present while that goodwill lasts, then let the session loosen into something less arranged. Nobody is asked to hold a smile, and nothing gets repeated once it has plainly stopped working.

You receive an edited set. Most of it stays in colour, and the frames that earn black and white are given it. Grandparents get their own copies without having to ask for them, which matters, because they generally will not ask.

Twenty-five years behind the lens

Patience with little ones in Kensington and Chelsea

Large family gatherings are photographed early in the day where possible, before the meal, before the drinks and while the youngest are still reasonably fresh. We never bribe or force a smile, because the genuine ones always look better and last longer in your album.

Home sessions suit newborns particularly well, since nothing has to be packed, and a baby's own room usually has better light than parents expect it to. Every session is tailored to your family, whether that is a gentle newborn shoot or a lively houseful of children.

Family Photographer in Kensington and Chelsea, FAQs

Decide a rough range of colours between you beforehand, since related outfits photograph better than identical ones. Footwear matters more than tops if we are on park ground in Kensington and Chelsea, so wear what you would actually walk in. Pack one spare top for whoever is likeliest to need it. Avoid anything with writing across the chest, which the eye reads before it reaches a face.

Yes, and tell us when you book, not on the morning, because a third generation changes the plan. If we are indoors at a Kensington and Chelsea address we pick the floor that suits whoever finds stairs hardest. If we are outdoors we choose a spot near the gate and take something to sit on. Grandparents are photographed early, while the children are still cooperating.

Yes. Many families choose a package that follows baby's first year, from a newborn session through sitting up and first steps to a cake smash on the first birthday. It is a lovely way to capture how quickly your little one grows. Kensington and Chelsea and neighbouring Notting Hill, Knightsbridge and Earls Court are all covered.

Yes. Book with some slack in the date rather than a fixed one, since the last weeks are unpredictable and a session moved by a fortnight costs nothing. In Kensington and Chelsea we would keep it close to a gate or do it at home, and we keep standing frames short with sitting ones between. If you want your partner or an older child in the pictures, say so and we will build the order round it.

Yes. It is at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6, and it is one warm room with the floor kept clear, no traffic outside the door and nothing a child can pull over. Most Kensington and Chelsea families book it for the days when the park is unusable. Bring a snack and a favourite toy; the toy tends to end up in the pictures, which is no bad thing at all.

Served by South Kensington and Sloane Square Underground stations on the District and Circle lines. For relaxed outdoor photographs around Kensington and Chelsea, we like Holland Park, and The Natural History Museum on Cromwell Road is a well-known local backdrop.

Most family bookings in the borough split across two grounds, and it helps to know which half is doing what. Holland Park is where the movement happens, and with a pram the measure of a park is not its acreage but how far the first usable ground sits from the gate you came in by. So we settle the gate first and work outward from there, rather than crossing the whole park to a spot picked off a map. The other half happens indoors, and there the borough's own housing sets the terms. A townhouse stacks its rooms vertically instead of spreading them, so a session at home is really a session on one floor, and if a grandparent is coming, that floor gets chosen by whoever finds stairs hardest. Everything else, including which room has the best light and which is tidiest, comes second to that. Small children do not ration themselves. Whatever a four year old intends to give, it arrives in the opening stretch and does not return later, which is why the frame holding all three generations gets made while everybody is still fresh, instead of being saved as the finish. After that the pictures are the unplanned ones, and they are usually the better half of the set. When the weather shuts the park down, the Northwood studio runs the same order indoors, floor cleared, so no adult spends the session steering a toddler round furniture.
