Groups run in a fixed order: everybody together at the beginning, then the grown-ups, then the children loose and running about while their patience lasts. Nobody is asked to sit still and beam on command, because that expression photographs as exactly what it is.
The same edited gallery goes to every adult who was there, sized for a frame and for emailing to whoever could not travel, so the grandparents are not left waiting on somebody else to forward them a week later.

For a family hour outdoors we look for space to run, somewhere to pause and a short walk from the car, and these Sutton parks range from a town-centre playground to 58 hectares of woodland and gardens. Opening times, parking and any rules on photography are worth checking with each park before the day, particularly with a newborn or grandparents coming along. Travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote before you book.
- Cheam Park on Tudor Close (SM3 8QS), laid out on the 19th-century grounds of Cheam Park House, has a playground, wooden trim trail, café, tennis courts and croquet and bowls. 1
- Nonsuch Park, between Stoneleigh, Cheam and Ewell, has been jointly managed by Sutton and Epsom and Ewell councils since 1937 and covers the site of Nonsuch Palace, which Henry VIII had built in 1538. 2
- Beddington Park on Church Road, Wallington (SM6 7NN), covers 58 hectares with woodland walks, formal gardens and the River Wandle ending in a lake in the Grange Garden; its Great Tudor Hall is the only Grade I listed building in the borough. 3
- Rose Hill Park is split into East (12.97 hectares, with sports pitches) and West (15.47 hectares), with a playground, café, pump track, bowls and tennis courts. 4

Yes, and with a newborn involved the session belongs at home in Sutton, not at Nonsuch Park. A baby feeding every couple of hours sets the timetable, and a park cannot be paused for a feed. We take the brothers and sisters first, while the day is still entertaining for them, then the baby last, usually asleep and usually beside a window. Allow a couple of hours with pauses built in.
Just tell us as soon as you can. Little ones get poorly and have off days, and we would much rather move a session than photograph a child who is unhappy. We will then find a new date, and for an outdoor Sutton session we will keep an eye on the forecast with you.
Allow about an hour, and a little more if the walk from the car to your spot in Beddington Park or Nonsuch Park is a long one for small legs. Newborn and toddler sessions are given extra time for feeds, naps and cuddles, whether we are at your home in Sutton. Your children set the pace, and in a park like Manor Park a break at the playground is part of the plan rather than an interruption.

Nonsuch Park runs to about 270 acres and for family work almost none of it is any use. A four year old spends their patience on the walking, not on the photographs, so the only ground that counts is whatever lies a minute or two from where the car and the pram come to rest. We choose that patch first and then stay inside it. The park straddles the boundary between Sutton and Epsom and Ewell, so where we meet is worth settling on the phone rather than sorting out in a car park, because the way you come in decides the surface a pram has to cross and how far a grandparent walks before there is anywhere to sit down. Order counts as much as ground. The frame containing everybody happens first, made while the smallest one still finds the whole business interesting; pairs and single portraits follow after, when a lost mood costs nothing. Driving to Northwood is not a realistic rescue on a grey morning, so the indoor version we plan for is your own house, lit by us. That is not second best. A child photographed on their own carpet, surrounded by their own things, gives far more than the same child walked into a strange room, and the result looks like your family instead of like a photographer's premises.
