We take the brothers and sisters first, while the day is still entertaining for them, then the baby last, usually asleep and usually beside a window. Allow a couple of hours with pauses built in.

Nonsuch Park runs to about 270 acres and for family work almost none of it is any use. A four year old spends their patience on the walking, not on the photographs, so the only ground that counts is whatever lies a minute or two from where the car and the pram come to rest. We choose that patch first and then stay inside it. The park straddles the Sutton and Cheam boundary, so where we meet is worth settling on the phone rather than sorting out in a car park, because the way you come in decides the surface a pram has to cross and how far a grandparent walks before there is anywhere to sit down. Order counts as much as ground. The frame containing everybody happens first, made while the smallest one still finds the whole business interesting; pairs and single portraits follow after, when a lost mood costs nothing. The wet weather plan is where Sutton parts company with towns near the studio. Driving to Northwood is not a realistic rescue on a grey morning, so the indoor version we plan for is your own house, lit by us. That is not second best. A child photographed on their own carpet, surrounded by their own things, gives far more than the same child walked into a strange room, and the result looks like your family instead of like a photographer's premises.
