In practice it means surfaces that get repaired, edges kept cut back and grass that is genuinely mown, so a pushchair rolls where it would otherwise dig in, and anybody slow on rough ground covers the same route as everyone else instead of waiting by a gate. At 130 acres there is also no need to go far. We agree one entrance and work close to it, because time spent walking comes straight off the only budget that matters. Small children carry a fixed store of goodwill and they spend it early. That fixes the running order, not the light: the whole group first, then whatever combination needs everyone standing still, then the children alone once the adults have stopped watching. Anything held back until the end gets photographed with a tired child in it. Two conditions send a Redbridge family to Northwood instead. One is an infant whose day runs on feeds and not on daylight. The other is ground still holding water, since wet grass ends a session with a toddler faster than rain ever does. In both cases a warm room where nothing needs carrying and nobody gets cold is simply the better plan, and the pictures are no worse for it. Nothing about a Redbridge winter afternoon suits a two year old outdoors, and pretending otherwise wastes everybody's morning.
