Because the session is planned before the day starts. We name an entrance at Valentines Park, work the open ground while the sun is still low, and shift over to Valentines Mansion in Ilford if it turns hard. That order is set by where the sun sits on the particular afternoon, and you get the sequence in writing once a date is agreed.

Two places carry most Redbridge portrait work and they do opposite jobs. Valentines Park is 130 acres of open ground, which sounds like an advantage and is largely a problem to be managed: open ground in summer is either glaring or patchy, and broken light across a face cannot be corrected afterwards. Valentines Mansion, over in Ilford, answers the same problem by standing still. A restored house dating from about 1696 presents an elevation with small-scale detail, window divisions, weathered surface, lines that are not quite straight, and detail at that scale still reads as texture from ten paces where a modern wall has already gone flat. Restored also means nothing sits behind a sitter's head that the eye finds before it finds them. Clothing then answers the background instead of the season. At the house, plain and unpatterned: an elevation of that age supplies every bit of texture a frame can hold, and a patterned top puts two competing surfaces into one picture. In the park, mid to dark tones separate cleanly from green, while bright white pulls attention down onto the shirt wherever it turns up. Season, far more than weather, settles where a sitting opens. With the leaves down the park is usable at any hour and keeps its shape. In full leaf the same ground goes blotchy by late morning, so a summer plan means the open edges early or late in the day, and the house in the hours between, where the light does not move around.
