For the City of London

Portrait photography in the City of London

A sitting is walked rather than staged. We start wherever the light is working that morning, move between two or three positions, and show you frames on the screen between them so a background can be ruled out before we commit to it.

Editing is colour, contrast and tidying only. Features are not reshaped. The finished set arrives as edited files at two sizes, one for screen use and one large enough to print properly. Nothing is added that was not there on the day.

We keep direction simple and clear, telling you exactly where to look and how to stand, so nothing feels awkward. We keep direction simple and clear, telling you exactly where to look and how to stand, so nothing feels awkward.

You are welcome to bring a few outfits, and we will help you choose what photographs best under studio light. Glasses wearers should bring the frames they actually wear rather than an old pair, since reflections are managed by moving the light rather than the glasses.

Good to know

Portrait Photographer in the City of London, FAQs

Certainly. Personal-branding portraits are planned around the impression you want to make, whether warm and approachable, creative or more authoritative. You come away with a range of assured images for your website, social profiles and wider professional presence, all shot with flattering, professional lighting. The City of London and neighbouring Clerkenwell, Farringdon and Barbican are all covered.

Allow an hour for an individual sitting in the City of London. That is roughly forty minutes of photography, with the rest spent moving between two or three positions near St Paul's. Groups take longer, mostly because getting six people across a busy pavement costs time nobody budgets for. At Postman's Park the benches let a sitting pause without anyone standing about waiting for the next frame.

Yes. The limit is space rather than headcount. Pavements in the City of London are working thoroughfares, and ten people standing on one will block it. Postman's Park is the sensible answer for anything above four, since the paths and benches give us somewhere to arrange people without being in the way. Tell us the number when booking so the spot is chosen before the day.

Because the plan is specific before we arrive. We start inside Postman's Park, where the trees and benches give a settled background and somewhere to pause, then walk out towards St Paul's only if the streets are quiet enough to work in. That order builds a fallback into the sitting, so a wet morning changes the route in the City of London rather than cancelling the booking.

Pack a spare layer in a contrasting shade. Backgrounds in the City of London run from pale cathedral stone to near black glass, and one wardrobe rarely works against both. Wear shoes you can cover a few streets in, since we move between positions. Leave a fresh haircut for the week before, not the morning. If you wear glasses, bring them, and we angle the head instead.

The Square Mile is built high and built close, and that single fact decides most of what happens in a sitting here. Direct sun reaches pavement level only for a narrow window either side of noon. For the rest of the day the light landing on a face has bounced off glass and pale stone before it arrives, which is soft and flattering, but it also carries the colour of whatever surface it came from. A face standing beside a wall of tinted glazing can turn cool and slightly green before anyone notices. The correction is position rather than equipment: turn the sitter until the largest pale surface in reach is doing the work and the tinted wall falls behind them instead. Postman's Park is the ground worth walking to near St Paul's, and the benches matter as much as the trees. Working at seated height drops the horizon behind the head and removes the moving background that a City pavement guarantees at any hour. The mature trees complicate summer, though. In full leaf they break sunlight into hard patches that cross a face and cannot be edited away, so from late spring the shaded half of the garden is the better ground and midday the worst hour to book. Winter reverses all of it. Bare branches let light down onto the paths, the garden reads open rather than enclosed, and a mid toned coat holds its own against Wren's pale cathedral stone, which will otherwise out-shine anything a sitter has put on that morning.
