Trent Park gives a sitting three different kinds of ground without moving the car, and choosing between them is mostly a decision about how much sky lands on a face. The open meadows give all of it, which is generous in the first hour after sunrise and the last before dusk, and unkind at noon in June, when overhead sun hollows the eyes and hardens every line it finds. The woodland does the reverse. A canopy behaves like an enormous diffuser hung close above, so contrast drops and skin renders softly, but everything darkens and greens at once, and that green settles on skin as readily as on leaves. A warmer top, and a long lens that pushes the trunks into a wash, matter more under trees than they ever do out on grass. The lakes are a third thing rather than a variation on either: a bank puts real distance behind a head, which no garden hedge can offer, so the background resolves into tone instead of detail and nothing behind the shoulder competes for attention. Season shifts the balance. Once the leaves are down the woodland stops being the dark option and the meadow grass is short again, so a winter sitting can use all three inside an hour and the pictures still hang together. From late spring the trees become the midday answer and the meadows the early and late one. Solid mid-tones work against all three grounds, and greens and mid-browns are the one thing to leave at home, since the woodland swallows them whole.
