Fryent Country Park is the useful ground for a Brent sitting, and the small woods matter more than the open fields do. A wood edge gives two things at once: shade deep enough to kill the squint that bare field light forces, and a bright background a few strides behind the subject, so the face can be soft while the frame is not dull. Season decides which side of that edge we work from. Bare branches in winter let light down through and the ground under a wood reads pale and graphic; from late spring the canopy closes, the same spot goes several stops darker, and the sensible line moves out to where the field begins. Brent is a mixed borough, and that has a technical consequence rather than a sentimental one. Skin tones across a single afternoon can run the full range, and a meter set for one will underexpose the next by a wide margin. We expose for the face rather than for the scene and hold the highlights back, which is why frames made on open ground here are usually lit with something shaping the light, a reflector or a scrim or the shade of a wood, instead of raw sun. Clothing follows the background. Rolling grass gives a wall of mid green, and mid green swallows olive, sage and khaki; deep tones separate from it cleanly, and so do warm neutrals. Avoid a print that repeats at small scale, since grass already supplies texture and the two fight each other. One accent colour, worn by one person, does more work than a coordinated set.
