Asian Wedding Photography Rooted in Brent

Brent is a diverse north-west London borough. Asian families throughout Harrow, Barnet trust us with their celebrations, large and small. Sikh weddings begin with kirtan long before the ceremony, and we cover that music too, because the anand karaj does not start in a vacuum.

The mehndi and sangeet are where families let go, so we shoot loose and candid there, catching the laughter, the songs and the henna drying on open hands. On the dance floor we shoot fast and close, catching the bhangra, the dhol and the uncles who never sit down, so the party reads as alive as it felt. We treat the gurdwara, the mandir and the mosque with the respect each deserves, dressing and moving to suit the space and its customs.

We photograph in neighbouring Hendon and Kingsbury just as often. Venues we know well in and near Brent include The Clay Oven Banqueting, Brent Civic Centre and Wembley International Hotel.

We often take couples to Fryent Country Park near Kingsbury, 103 hectares of rolling fields and small woods for a few quiet portraits, and Wembley Stadium, reopened in 2007 with a 90,000 seat capacity and its landmark arch is a lovely backdrop nearby.

Consent at a nikah is spoken aloud and sometimes barely audibly, so we watch the bride's and the groom's faces for it rather than the officiant's. A ceremony is a sequence of small sacred acts, not one photograph, and we tell it as the story it is, from the first ritual to the last. The muhurat and muhurtham, the auspicious hours, set the pace of the ceremony, and we plan around them.

When the baraat sets off, the dhol drives the dancing and the groom moves slowly forward amid his family, and we are in the thick of every joyful step. Dandiya sticks move fast and unpredictably, and a clean frame of them means learning the rhythm of the circle before ever raising the camera. Sangeet venues are usually dark and lit for the stage, so we bring what is needed to keep the audience's faces visible without blinding the performers.
