When the couple rise as husband and wife and turn to their families, we are already facing them, ready for the smiles that follow the solemnity. Once the nikah is done and the couple are declared married, a wave of relief crosses the room, and that reaction is often the finest picture of the ceremony.
Speeches at an Asian reception can run long and range from tearful to merciless, and we watch the top table's reactions as closely as the speaker. Mehndi in some families is a women's gathering, and where that is the case we agree in advance exactly what coverage your family wants and keep to it. Mayian and the yellow-clothed rituals before a Punjabi wedding are full of colour, and we photograph the ritual and the food being prepared alongside it.
