A Sikh wedding day that starts in Pinner may spend the morning at one postcode and the afternoon at another. Getting ready might happen at a house in North Harrow, Rayners Lane or Hatch End, which is also where the cars would assemble. The ceremony, though, belongs to a building somewhere else. Nothing about that is difficult. It is simply what your timings must be honest about.

Choora, milni, laavan and doli

Milni gives the first real photograph, and it usually happens on tarmac rather than anywhere designed for photographs, so we track the pairs and ignore the crowd. Jago, plus a mehndi night earlier that same week, run on whatever lamps the household owns; warmer and lower than anyone expects, and none the worse for it. Within the hall, assume nothing may be added. Carpet colour climbs into everybody's face, and white balance plus patience fixes that, not a light stand.

The laavan comes in four rounds, and four identical photographs is not the answer. A different set of faces watches each one, and by the fourth the room has already risen. We shoot from one planted position and alter lens and height alone, because crossing a seated sangat costs more than whatever frame it buys. Then the doli: brief, loud, and largely about whoever stays behind. Langar, somewhere in the middle, is when a day finally loosens its collar.

Chiefly, twenty five years buys restraint. Standing still at the right moment is the entire job inside a hall where the ceremony matters and photography does not. So you get the rounds covered properly, the family greetings nobody remembers to request, and files returned quickly. Quicker than most.

For portraits between the gurdwara and the reception, Pinner Memorial Park has a pond, a Peace Garden and woodland, with entrances on Chapel Lane, Marsh Road and West End Lane. West House's Verden Gallery, overlooking the lake in Pinner Memorial Park, suits up to 60 guests, which makes it one published option for a smaller gathering after the laavan.

The Grange Country House in neighbouring Northwood is a restored 15th-century country house offered for weddings on an exclusive-hire basis, from ceremony-only to all-inclusive packages. ¹

Are you insured to work at our gurdwara and venue in Pinner?+

Yes, on both counts. Our liability cover and our equipment cover are current, and whoever needs the certificate gets it. Committees frequently want sight of it a fortnight ahead, so mention it early and it goes out that morning.

Can we pay for our wedding photography in stages?+

Yes. Something up front holds the date. What remains can be broken up however you want, over as many payments as suits, provided it is clear by the wedding. Whatever you propose gets written down.

Do you cover the maiyan and vatna ceremonies before the wedding?+

Yes, and both repay the coverage. They run at home, in daylight, while relatives are busy doing something rather than posing, so nothing comes out stiff. Send an address and set aside an hour; we work quietly around whatever is happening.

Will you direct us during the Anand Karaj?+

No. Nothing is staged while the ceremony proceeds. We agree our standing positions beforehand with whoever has been given charge of the hall, and then we hold them. Any directing you want happens later, during portraits, where it costs nobody anything.

Do you travel to Pinner for Sikh weddings?+
