A preserved High Street tells you what the local trade looks like. Frontages are narrow and the premises behind them are deep and small, which means a lot of independent operators and single-room businesses rather than open-plan floors. That shapes the work more than any brief does. Inside a narrow unit there is nowhere to retreat to, so interiors get built from the corners, and the frontage can only be taken from as far back as the street permits, which means the street chooses the lens. The lighting problem in such a shop is always the same, and always underestimated. A large window at the front and a deep room behind it put several stops between the door and the back wall. Expose for the window and the interior turns into a cave; expose for the interior and the window burns out to white. The answer is to raise the back of the room, or to work when the sun is off the frontage. Warm lamps mixed with daylight are the other trap: two colour temperatures in one frame leave skin green in half the picture, and the cure is to switch one source off rather than fix it later. Pinner Fair is the one fixture that rearranges the street, so it is worth deciding early whether you want the town looking like itself or looking busy. For a team, the setup stays put and staff are released in whatever order the day allows, with the same recipe kept so nobody photographed later looks pasted in. Hatch End, North Harrow and Rayners Lane are worked the same way.
