The rituals that make a Hindu ceremony

A haldi morning is a small room holding more bodies than its floor plan intended, turmeric on every surface, so we work close, quick and wide, and accept that the walls are the wrong colour. The fire is the harder problem. Flame sits near candlelight on the scale, a window behind it sits far cooler, and the smoke goes wherever the room sends it. We expose for skin rather than for the flame, and we keep moving so the smoke is lit from behind us, which turns it silver instead of grey.

Four posts and a seated priest decide the standing room available to a camera, and they decide it the moment the canopy has been dressed. Work it out for yourself beforehand instead of discovering it mid kanyadaan. A circuit walked repeatedly is the shortest road to one photograph taken four times, so every lap shifts height, shifts side, shifts focal length. Sindoor lasts about a second. Our feet are planted for it in advance, not travelling towards it.

Both, and both vanish quickly, so we stand planted before either one begins. If the crowd blocks the side we need at the mandap, flag it early and a line through will be found before guests settle.
