Ceilings and windows, not views, decide how a Hindu day in Hatch End photographs. Morning ritual happens in a house, where one window carries the whole room and thirty relatives stand in its way. Around the sacred fire, step by step

A cloth roof on four posts is a small architecture of its own, and it hides as much as it frames. Two posts will always fall between lens and face, so we walk around rather than zoom through. Agni sits at floor level, which means the couple are lit from beneath and from the fabric overhead at once, warm and thin. Skin sets the exposure. The flame may clip, and that is correct.

Four seconds, roughly, is all that varmala gets, and no one warns you first. Watch the hands, because hands rise before faces do. Saptapadi poses the opposite difficulty: one short circuit walked seven times over, yielding seven pictures with no difference between them unless the photographer keeps shifting. Changing height and changing side on every lap is what makes seven laps look like seven pictures. Sindoor and the mangalsutra follow, both small gestures at close range, both easily lost behind a shoulder if we are not already standing where they will happen.
