Hatch End is tree-lined almost everywhere, and from about May that canopy is the one thing a sitting has to be planned around. Continuous branches do not produce even shade. They produce small hard patches of sun that land on a forehead or one side of a nose, and a bright patch on skin is the single fault in a photograph that cannot be corrected later without flattening everything around it. The working rule through summer is to stand people well inside the shade of a crown rather than out at its edge where the gaps are, or to wait for the half hour after the sun has dropped behind the roofline. Winter reverses the whole thing. With the branches bare, the same pavements take low direct sun and the street turns into the easy ground rather than the difficult one. The period frontages behind all this decide clothing more than anything else does. Brick sits in the middle of the tonal range and carries warmth, which is very close to what skin does, so a sitter in tan, rust, warm beige or a soft pink tends to sink into the wall behind them. Navy, charcoal, forest green, deep burgundy and off-white all separate cleanly, and none of them fight the brick. Painted render and a dark front door do the same job from the other direction. Pattern is the thing to leave at home, since a small repeating print in front of brickwork gives the eye two competing textures and it will look at neither.
