A sitting runs to about ninety minutes. We talk for the first few of those, photograph in short runs with breaks between them, and turn the camera round as we go so nothing at the end is a surprise.
Afterwards you see the whole set and pick your favourites. Those are finished one at a time: skin left as skin, a stray hair dealt with, tone and contrast set for the way you intend to use the picture. Files come at a size for screens and a size for printing.

My two sisters and I ‘ the golden girls’ had a great, hilarious photo session. Kaushik is very professional and took some amazing photos especially when we were laughing so much trying to get up from the floor. Can’t wait to see ‘air brushed’ version. Well at 75 you need a little help. Definitely recommend Kashuik. He enjoyed our craziness!

- Headstone Manor, the moated manor house in Headstone Manor Park, was begun around 1310, is Grade I listed and is the earliest surviving timber-framed building in Middlesex. 1
- Pinner Memorial Park, a Green Flag park near Pinner centre, has a duck pond, an aviary, an ornamental Peace Garden, woodland and the Heath Robinson Museum. 2
- Harrow Arts Centre and Elliott Hall. Harrow Arts Centre at 171 Uxbridge Road stands on the site of the Royal Commercial Travellers School; its Elliott Hall auditorium was built in 1904, and the site has been an arts centre since 1988. 3
- Hatch End Riverside Park on Uxbridge Road is a Green Flag park with an accessible circular path, wildflower meadows, woodland, an outdoor performance stage and benches overlooking the River Pinn. 4

Sittings in Hatch End are put in the last hour of daylight rather than the middle of the day, which means a late slot in June and a mid-afternoon one in December, and the Northwood studio is held as the same-day alternative if the rain arrives. Absolutely, and we encourage it. Two or three changes of clothes give welcome variety, and we build time for them into the session. Ask beforehand and we will suggest which colours and styles work best under the studio lights.
Yes, and Hatch End offers plenty of settings for it. We agree a specific corner and a specific time rather than just the town, since the streets change character completely between one end of the year and the other. Pinner Memorial Park is the alternative when a sitting wants open ground behind it. Bring a second top; a change of colour halfway gives you two clearly different sets.

Hatch End is tree-lined almost everywhere, and from about May that canopy is the one thing a sitting has to be planned around. Continuous branches do not produce even shade. They produce small hard patches of sun that land on a forehead or one side of a nose, and a bright patch on skin is the single fault in a photograph that cannot be corrected later without flattening everything around it. The working rule through summer is to stand people well inside the shade of a crown rather than out at its edge where the gaps are, or to wait for the half hour after the sun has dropped behind the roofline. Winter reverses the whole thing. With the branches bare, the same pavements take low direct sun and the street turns into the easy ground rather than the difficult one. The period frontages behind all this decide clothing more than anything else does. Brick sits in the middle of the tonal range and carries warmth, which is very close to what skin does, so a sitter in tan, rust, warm beige or a soft pink tends to sink into the wall behind them. Navy, charcoal, forest green, deep burgundy and off-white all separate cleanly, and none of them fight the brick. Painted render and a dark front door do the same job from the other direction. Pattern is the thing to leave at home, since a small repeating print in front of brickwork gives the eye two competing textures and it will look at neither.

At the studio
Getting to the studio from Hatch End
The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, is where you will find us, a quick drive from Hatch End. Sittings for portraits, families and headshots are booked there, and we handle prints, framing, old photographs and negatives in house. Passport and ID photos need no appointment. The studio welcomes portrait sittings Monday to Saturday from 10:30 until 18:00, and Sunday from 13:00 until 18:00.
Each portrait is taken by Kaushik Bathia FBIPP FMPA in person; he has worked from the Northwood studio since 2001 and holds five European Kodak Gold Awards.
