How a Sudbury Sikh wedding day would run

An anand karaj tends to finish while most receptions are still being set up, which gives a Sudbury day an unusual shape. Inside the hall the constraints arrive before we do. A raised platform must be kept clear, the carpet holds everyone including us, and the canopy overhead casts a shadow of its own. Flash is out, so kirtan gets photographed on whatever the ceiling supplies, usually tungsten diluted by whatever daylight the high windows admit. We take one side position at the start and keep it right through the laavan, swapping lens instead of place, since a photographer wandering about during the four rounds is what a room notices.

Ardas, then karah parshad, and the room loosens. That is the moment to work. Relatives who sat still for an hour begin turning to one another, and the truthful frames arrive in the quarter hour following the service rather than during it. Milni does the same job earlier, in pairs, at arm's length. Later, in an evening room that will actually take direction, we put up our own lighting, and those hours are the only ones where the pictures are ours to design.

Etiquette amounts mostly to restraint. We turn up early, ask the sewadars which positions are welcome, and do not argue with the reply. No equipment of ours rests on floor people walk across. When a family wants us to pause for a passage, we pause, and nothing resumes until somebody nods.
