Planning Sikh wedding photography in Wembley

Brent's gurdwaras run large, and a full darbar hall tells you less about the photography than the floor does. Everyone sits down, so the camera sits down too; hold a lens up at standing height and it looks over the congregation, flattening it. An anand karaj is therefore worked mostly from the knees, along one side, with whatever lens came in through the door, because changing glass mid-ceremony means standing up, and standing up is the disruption.

The other fixed quantity is light. A hall lit for congregational reading holds the same brightness from the first shabad to the last, which sounds like a difficulty and is really a gift: exposure gets settled in the opening minute and then left alone. What remains is position, and position comes down to which spots leave every sightline forward untouched by a photographer.

From ardas to karah parshad at a Wembley Anand Karaj

Milni happens outside, usually in daylight, the only stretch of morning that leaves any room to move. Pairs of relatives meet and embrace in a set order; ask both families for that order the night before, because guessing who comes next costs you the frame. Indoors, the four laavan follow one another with only kirtan between them, and each round looks much the same from a fixed point. So we vary height instead of place: one low, one from behind the sangat, one from the far side.

Langar afterwards is the hour most easily photographed badly, because a queue photographs as a queue. We look at the serving line and at hands instead, and stand only where nobody is eating. A doli poses the reverse problem: it arrives without warning and finishes as a car door shuts. We take up position early, nearer the car than the family, and leave the goodbye to the people having it.

Will the ceremony photos look dark if everything happens indoors?+

No. Expect them to look like the hall itself, not like a studio. Its lighting is dim and steady, so we use fast lenses and accept some grain, which reads far better than a flashgun would. The warmth of those bulbs is kept, not corrected away.

Are you able to work without flash near the Guru Granth Sahib?+

Yes, and unasked we would do the same. The front of a darbar hall is covered on available light, at range, with a long lens. Nothing is moved and nothing is lit, and the lens stays below the eye level of a seated congregation.

We are having an Anand Karaj and a civil ceremony. Can you cover both?+

Yes, though not as one job repeated. A registrar's slot runs short, bright and administrative; the morning runs long and quiet. Tell us how many hours sit between the two when you book, because much of the planning follows from that number.

How do you photograph the baraat?+

Backwards, ahead of it. A baraat moves at whatever speed the drum sets rather than the walkers, so we keep in front and hold the doors of the building in frame behind us. The final twenty yards earn their place; the street before repeats itself.

Are you insured to work at our gurdwara and venue in Wembley?+

Yes. Both the liability and the equipment side are covered, and what a hall actually wants is a certificate on file. Name the buildings in Wembley once they are confirmed and ours reaches the office there without you having to chase it.
