The darbar hall, then an evening in Greenwich

Two commissions, one date, and a journey wedged between them. The building holding the ceremony answers to a congregation whose practice long predates your booking, and a camera works within that or it does not work. Reverse each of those terms and you have the evening room, where furniture, timing and light sit under your control. It is easy to plan each half properly and leave the seam to look after itself, which is precisely where an afternoon comes apart.

That seam deserves an hour of thought. Daylight in a hall nobody may rewire is simply whatever it is; an evening room can be built to order. Ask your reception venue when the space actually becomes free rather than when the booking nominally starts, because those spare hours are where a couple's own portraits end up living. The high ground of Greenwich Park, up towards the Royal Observatory, earns a slot between the two.

Sitting means shooting upwards through the sangat, which compresses rows into shoulders and turbans unless you reach the aisle early and stay there. What remains is patience, a long lens working from the rear and a wide one taken off the carpet.

The four laavan keep their own rhythm, and the palla binds a couple into a single moving object, so we track the pair instead of either individual. Milni takes place outside in whatever weather Greenwich supplies, and it gives up the most honest ten minutes of the morning because no one out there is performing. Langar gets served low and eaten quickly; what earns a photograph is hands and steel. Flat light has usually arrived by the doli, which is when we bring our own rather than push the sensor.

How do you make sure our photographs are never lost?+

Two cards fill simultaneously in each body, so losing either one changes nothing. That evening both sets go to drives kept well apart, with a copy leaving the premises altogether, and deletion waits until your gallery has been approved.

Can you cover a Greenwich gurdwara and a separate reception venue on the same day?+

Yes, and it counts as normal practice, not an upgrade. While one photographer stays beside the bride, the second reaches your Greenwich reception ahead of the guests and lights the room empty. Parallel working is what makes both halves possible.

Do you and your team cover your heads inside the gurdwara?+
