Greenwich is a riverside south-east London borough rich in maritime history. Families throughout Lewisham, Bexley bring us into their gurdwaras, mosques and banqueting halls, and we treat each setting with the respect it is due. When the couple rise as husband and wife and turn to their families, we are already facing them, ready for the smiles that follow the solemnity.

During the laavan we stay low and still at the side of the darbar hall, heads covered and shoes left at the door, so our presence never registers. We cover both families equally, making sure the groom's side and the bride's side each come away with a full record of their own people and their own moments. We photograph with warmth and respect, mindful of the meaning behind each ritual across every faith.

For relaxed couple photographs, we like Greenwich Park, a Royal Park with panoramic river views and tree-lined avenues, and The Royal Observatory and the Prime Meridian line gives the day a strong sense of Greenwich.

The rituals that make your day

During the most solemn passages we step back and lengthen the lens, so the granthi's words or the sacred fire are photographed from a respectful distance. Shoes off, heads covered and no frame taken from above seated level: those are the terms of photographing inside a gurdwara, and we keep them without needing reminding. We are ready for the giving of the sindoor and the tying of the mangalsutra at a Hindu ceremony.

The mehndi night, the sangeet and the haldi each carry their own mood, and we photograph them all. Aarti at the door, when the groom is welcomed with a tray and a certain amount of teasing, is a small ritual that reliably produces laughter. The bhangra and the dancing carry the reception late into the night, and we stay for all of it.
