Quietly, between shabads, we make our only movements of the ceremony, so the transition from one position to another happens inside the music rather than across the silence. Never do we place equipment on the floor of the darbar hall or lean anything where it does not belong, and we carry only what our hands can hold for the length of the ceremony. Grandparents watching the fourth laav complete often give the most honest reaction in the hall, and we deliberately turn away from the couple at that point to find it.

We photograph the first dance for the small things, the way you hold each other, the kalire still on your wrist and the friends crowding in as the song closes. We photograph the mehndi night as the henna is drawn, holding the patterns spreading over your hands and the songs and teasing flowing around the artist as she works.
