The mehndi, the nikah and the walima

Dates and mithai are pressed into the couple's hands the instant the contract is done, and that first shared sweetness is one of the warmest frames of the whole ceremony. Where the nikah is held in a mosque, we work with our heads respectfully covered and shoes removed, moving only between stages so the ceremony flows undisturbed. Nervousness before the acceptance is real and universal, and we photograph it honestly. The slight tremble, the glance to a parent, the deep breath, none of it needs improving upon.

Where the mehndi has a segregated ladies' side, so the dancing, the henna and the laughter are all kept. Qawwali or a live singer changes the whole character of a dholki, and where we are covering it we work with the musicians rather than around them so the performance is properly recorded. Trays of mithai and dates move round the room after the good news, and we photograph the sharing, because the sweetness is part of the story.
