Valentines Park is where nearly every Ilford family session ends up, and the decision that actually determines whether the pictures work is where everybody's feet go. Park ground is rarely level, and a group of mixed heights standing on a slope produces heads at random elevations with gaps of sky between them. The fix is not to keep rearranging people; it is to sit the adults down. A bench, a low wall or the grass itself gives a fixed baseline, and children then fill the space in front and between rather than being lined up and asked to stand still. Season matters more than people expect. Midsummer's only usable light arrives late enough to collide with bedtime, while midwinter's has gone by mid-afternoon, which suits toddlers perfectly. Late September into October is the honest best window: warm light at a civilised hour, and ground still dry enough to push a pram over. After heavy rain the lawns are out altogether, and the paths that stay usable put a hard straight line across the back of every frame, which is the argument for moving indoors instead.
