Everything a civil ceremony must contain happens fast: the entrance, two sets of vows, the rings, and a signing staged for the camera anyway. Everything else falls either side. We work the arrival hard and the ten minutes following the ceremony harder still, because that is where people are still surprised and have not yet arranged their faces into something presentable.
Group photographs are the single part of a wedding we run, and they work on one condition: a written list, agreed in advance, held to about ten. Each takes three minutes to gather and one to shoot, and the arithmetic is unforgiving. We want a named person on either side who recognises the faces, because a photographer calling for an aunt he cannot pick out is how an hour disappears.
