No part of the darbar hall shifts to accommodate a camera, and the Guru Granth Sahib's sightline is the one nobody may break, so our job reduces to choosing a floor position and then living inside it. From the back on a long lens you hold the circuit and lose the faces. From a flank, low down, you get faces and a wall of shoulders behind them. We take the flank and let each laavan come back towards us rather than following it round.
The milni is over in minutes, takes place out of doors under whatever sky is available, and usually catches two families still working out who is who. A palla being placed is quiet, small, and easily hidden by one shoulder. Langar is worth putting on the list: seated rows, plates on the floor, not one person performing. Jago, held on the preceding night, is loud and dark and wants a different bag entirely.
