You choose from a proof set while we are still there, and chosen frames are delivered cropped two ways, tight for a badge and wider for a layout that runs text alongside. Lighting height and distance are noted, so a person photographed months afterwards lands in the same set.

Ealing Broadway gathers the Elizabeth line, the Central and the District into one interchange, and a business based here may well have colleagues spread across London and beyond. That spread decides how a headshot made here should look. The person sitting for one will, more often than not, end up on a page beside colleagues photographed in another city by another photographer under whatever light that room happened to own. The picture is therefore judged against a convention rather than against a place. The convention is narrow and worth naming: even light on both sides of a face, eyes on the horizontal centre or a little above, one flat tone behind, and no colour cast on the skin. Almost every part of that is hard to hold outdoors. Under our own light indoors none of that is in play, and the same result can be produced again in a year for whoever needs adding to the set. That repeatability, rather than any one flattering frame, is the argument for photographing a headshot in a room instead of in a park.

Our studio is at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, around 8 miles from Ealing and close to Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line. Individual headshots can be booked there, and the studio also takes in prints, frames, old photographs and negatives for work in house. Passport and ID photos are taken at the studio too. We open from 10:30 until 18:00 Monday to Saturday, and from 13:00 until 18:00 on Sundays.
Each headshot is taken by Kaushik Bathia personally, a Fellow of the BIPP and the MPA with five European Kodak Gold Awards, who has run the Northwood studio since 2001.
