What makes a good actor headshot?

A good actor headshot does one job: it makes a casting director believe that the person in the photograph is the person who will walk into the audition room. That means it must be current, truthful and alive, shot in flattering but natural-looking light, framed on the face, against a background that says nothing, with an expression that suggests thought rather than a pose. It is the opposite of a glamour portrait: no heavy retouching, no dramatic filters, no five-year-old version of you. At our studio, a short Metropolitan line ride from central London, actor headshots are photographed by Kaushik Bathia, an award-winning portrait photographer established in 2001, and delivered as high-resolution files plus versions sized for Spotlight and the main casting platforms. Sessions are unhurried, with several looks covered and images reviewed together on screen, so you leave with real choices, not one lucky frame.

Casting directors scroll through hundreds of thumbnails at a sitting, and they are not looking for the most beautiful photograph; they are looking for the face that fits the part and a headshot they can trust. Graduates building a first Spotlight profile, working actors whose headshot has drifted out of date, presenters and voice artists who need a truthful public face, and performers changing casting bracket as their look matures: the session adapts to where you are in the profession, not the other way around.

If your hair, weight or age bracket has changed since your last headshot, casting directors notice before you do, and an out-of-date headshot quietly costs auditions. The working rule across the industry is simple: when you no longer walk into the room looking like your photograph, it is time. Many of the actors we photograph come back every couple of years for exactly that reason.

Planning your session

How to get the most from your headshots

Book your session for a day when you can arrive unrushed; a headshot taken straight after a sprint from the Tube looks like one. Bring two or three plain tops in mid-tones without logos, wear your hair as you would to an audition, and keep make-up minimal so the retouching can stay honest. Sleep matters more than any of it. During the session we work through your looks methodically, reviewing on screen, and we talk about the parts you are up for, because a headshot aimed at "young dad in a drama" is framed and lit differently from one aimed at "detective who has seen too much". Afterwards you choose your selects, light retouching is applied, and your files arrive sized for upload. The studio is easy to reach from across London and North West London, including Harrow, Watford, Pinner and Ruislip, see all areas.
