Sittings are short. Twenty minutes of photography is usually plenty, and the first few of those go on shoulder angle and chin position rather than on equipment.
You pick from proofs the same week, and the chosen frames come back cropped three ways: square, wide and tall. That means one picture drops into a profile circle, a site banner and a press listing without anybody re-cutting it badly later on. Booking again for a new starter uses the same setup.

Hackney Central and Hackney Downs put the borough on the Overground, and that single piece of geography shapes headshot bookings here more than anything else. The more interesting question is which convention the picture has to satisfy. A borough built on independent shops, small studios and a working arts and music scene turns out a great many people who are their own employer. Their headshot does not sit in a grid alongside forty colleagues. It sits on their own site, above their own work, often next to photographs of that work, and a white cut-out is the wrong instinct in that position. It reads as a personnel record and it argues with everything else on the page. A background carrying tone and depth, and a crop that keeps the shoulders in, sits far better beside a portfolio. The exception is anyone whose employer supplies a template, and here a fair number of people are both things at once, freelance one month and contracted the next. So we photograph both in a single sitting: the tight neutral frame first, then the looser one with texture behind it. The lighting stays identical across the two, which is what stops a profile picture and a website portrait looking like two different people photographed years apart.
