We follow the day rather than stage it, so the photographs show what actually happened, laughter and tears included. With two households and often two venues, we would follow the sehra bandi at one and the choora at the other, then the milni and the Anand Karaj, before an evening reception that could be held in the Assembly Hall at Hackney Town Hall, with its two curved staircases. A preview set follows soon after the wedding, and the full gallery once every frame has been properly finished. Hand-finished albums, a relaxed engagement shoot, perhaps in Springfield Park with its views over Walthamstow Marshes, and a second photographer for larger celebrations can all be added. An anand karaj begins in the morning, and Hackney Downs and Hackney Central both put guests within reach on the Overground. The gurdwara itself asks for restraint: shoes off at the door, head covered, and a seated position from which the Guru Granth Sahib is never looked down upon. Kirtan carries the four laavan, then ardas, then the sikhia. Langar follows. Hackney Town Hall then takes an evening reception, and Victoria Park's lakes give the couple somewhere quiet before the doli.

The gurdwara morning and the Hackney evening
An institution owns the building; a wedding only borrows it, and you modify nothing. Whatever fittings were put in for congregational use are the fittings you have, at whatever colour they happen to run, and we carry nothing into a darbar hall that stands on legs. That reads as a restriction. Mostly it is a simplification: exposure gets solved once, early, and then stops being a question all morning. Camera height is not a creative decision here; the whole geometry of the room acknowledges the Guru Granth Sahib.
Later the job inverts. A hired room gives the light back to you, so the evening turns into a series of decisions instead of a series of acceptances. Two civic rooms can carry this work in the borough: Shoreditch Town Hall and Hackney Town Hall. What we would not do is force the two halves into one look afterwards. Morning and evening were never the same day, and an edit that pretends otherwise flattens both.

From milni to doli: the Sikh wedding day
Milni takes place outside, under whatever the sky is offering, which in east London means flat cloud or a hard low sun coming straight up the street. We work it quickly and move on. Indoors everybody sits at carpet level, which drops the working eye-line to about eighteen inches and turns a long morning into kneeling rather than standing. Lenses get chosen for that height before anything else.
Hold the palla and you hold the round. It is the one visible connection between two people otherwise sitting apart, and a frame without it in shot has recorded very little. Kirtan announces when a circuit is closing, so the cue for position is aural rather than visual. Langar afterwards returns everybody to hands, plates and floor level. Then the doli, in poor light, moving fast through a crowd of relatives, and nobody stages that twice. Where a jago runs beforehand, it is a separate problem entirely, all handheld light and movement.

Not necessarily. One camera copes with a ceremony where the whole room faces one way. The argument for a second is the morning instead: milni outdoors while two families prepare in separate places. It is an addition to the booking, never the default.
Card failure is rare and unrecoverable, so we design against it. Duplicate recording inside the camera, then two independent copies made that same night in two locations, then a third once editing begins. No link in that chain can lose a wedding on its own.
We stop. Standing through ardas would be a photographic decision inside a moment that is not photographic, so the camera rests at our side until it ends. Anything wanted from those minutes is taken either side of them.
