Milni takes place outside, under whatever the sky is offering, which in east London means flat cloud or a hard low sun coming straight up the street. We work it quickly and move on. Indoors everybody sits at carpet level, which drops the working eye-line to about eighteen inches and turns a long morning into kneeling rather than standing. Lenses get chosen for that height before anything else.

Hold the palla and you hold the round. It is the one visible connection between two people otherwise sitting apart, and a frame without it in shot has recorded very little. Kirtan announces when a circuit is closing, so the cue for position is aural rather than visual. Langar afterwards returns everybody to hands, plates and floor level. Then the doli, in poor light, moving fast through a crowd of relatives, and nobody stages that twice. Where a jago runs beforehand, it is a separate problem entirely, all handheld light and movement.

You will see a small selection quite quickly, picked so that something exists to send round. The whole edit is slower: reconciling a morning hall with an evening room takes real time at the desk, and hurrying that always shows.

Do you photograph the evening reception in Hackney as well as the ceremony?+
