Four laavan, the same circle each time, and four photographs that will look identical unless the position changes on every one. Movement happens between circuits, never during. Covered heads, bare feet, and anyone working at floor level among seated people has a choice of two heights, both of them low. A camera belongs behind the sangat, never in the clear ground a hall keeps at its front, and no flash fires inside that room at all.
Pairs of relatives embrace in turn, early and outdoors, beneath a sky nobody chose; nobody pauses milni for a camera. Names help: with the list in hand we know who is meeting whom. Food served on the floor turns langar into a picture of hands and rows rather than faces, which is the truthful version of it. Doli is the item people forget when they book, and then it is the strongest thing in the gallery.
