Wandsworth Common offers a sitting two grounds rather than one, and choosing between them is really a decision about how hard the light is that day. The open green has nothing overhead, so in summer it wants either the early part of the morning or the hour before dusk; between those, the sun is high enough to press a hard line beneath the nose and to hollow the eyes out. The woodland does the opposite job badly. A canopy scatters light, but it also drops bright coins of sun across a face, and a face that is half in sun and half in leaf shade cannot be rescued in the edit. The reliable ground is the boundary between the two, a pace or so inside the shade with the open green in front working as fill. The lakes complicate this in a way worth knowing. An overcast sky reflected off flat water is a broad low source and it flatters a face, but on a clear day the same water turns hard and specular and finds its way into the frame as a glare behind the head. Season swings the whole argument. From November the bare canopy lets light through and the wooded parts photograph open and graphic, so the trees become usable at any hour; by late spring the leaf cover is dense and open ground is the brighter option. Clothing follows from that. Mid greens and olives sink into summer foliage, so charcoal, navy, rust and cream are what hold a sitter clear of it.
