Richmond upon Thames and nearby
We meet at a park gate you name, walk a short distance instead of a hike, and stay in one spot long enough to get it right before moving on. Frames come up on the camera back during the sitting, so you know while we are still there what is already in hand.
Afterwards a private gallery arrives with the finished pictures, supplied at a size for screens and a size that prints, with mono versions wherever a frame carries them.

What we offer
Individual and couple sittings photographed on the open grassland and beneath the old trees of Richmond Park.
Winter sittings while the grass is short and pale; summer sittings kept to the first and last hours.
Northwood available whenever weather rules the park out, and the finished gallery is identical either way.
Local and experienced
Retouching is natural and light, smoothing distractions while keeping your skin, lines and character exactly as they are. Backdrops and lighting are changed through the session, giving you a mix of clean studio looks and softer, moodier frames.
After the session, you receive a gallery of carefully edited images to choose your favourites from. Glasses wearers should bring the frames they actually wear rather than an old pair, since reflections are managed by moving the light rather than the glasses.

Good to know
Yes, happily. Plenty of sessions, in the studio or around Richmond upon Thames, combine individual portraits with a few couple or group frames, and that slots easily into the time. Just let us know in advance who will be there, and we will plan the lighting and looks to suit all of you.
Yes. Groups in Richmond upon Thames are photographed either on the open grass at Richmond Park or under lights at Northwood, and headcount decides which. Past roughly eight people a single row stops working outdoors, so we build the group in tiers with a stand of trees behind. Give us a headcount and rough ages, and we will name a gate to meet at.
Soon, as we pride ourselves on a fast turnaround. Whether we photographed you in Richmond upon Thames or at the studio, we edit your images promptly and send a gallery to choose from. Any prints, frames, canvases or albums you order then follow just a short while later.
Allow around ninety minutes at Richmond Park. Perhaps forty of those are photography and the rest is walking between the grassland, the trees and the water, since none of the three is in the same place. At Northwood the same work takes under an hour, because the ground never changes and there is no weather to negotiate with along the way.
Shoes that cope with grass matter, because very little of Richmond Park is made-up path once you are through the gates. Pack two tops of different weight: the light drops quickly at the open end of a day and a warmer layer keeps a sitting alive. Avoid strong pattern, and avoid green in summer. Bring glasses if you wear them; reflections are our problem.

Richmond Park hands a sitting two kinds of ground, and which one you choose decides nearly everything that follows. Wide open grassland has nothing above it, so with the sun high the light drops vertically: hair goes bright, eyes sink into shadow, and turning the sitter fixes nothing because there is nowhere else to stand. The ancient trees look like the remedy and are, though not where people assume. Put someone directly under a broad old crown and you get hard coins of sun sliding across a face against near-black shade, which is harder to use than plain sky. The position that works is the outer rim of the canopy, sitter facing out into the field: branches cut off the sky straight overhead while the grassland ahead stays open and returns a wide, even light. The calendar shifts this ground further than any single day's weather can. Through winter the grass is cropped and bleached and photographs as a pale field, which pushes a dark coat forward and holds its edges. By June the same ground stands tall and heavily green, and it swallows olive, khaki and every forest tone until the sitter reads as a shape with a face above it. Clothing therefore follows the season rather than the wardrobe: warm mid tones once the grass is up, denser and colder colour once it has gone back down. The ponds add one more decision, since standing water carries the sky and puts a bright band behind the shoulders that has to be placed on purpose rather than noticed later.

How it works
We travel to Richmond upon Thames rather than asking you to travel to us. On-location coverage suits weddings, corporate events, team headshots and product shoots, and we bring whatever lighting the space needs. The Northwood studio is available too if you prefer it.
