If you have Osterley Park in mind, that is a question to put to the estate before a date is fixed: it is a National Trust mansion and parkland, and estates of that kind set their own conditions for photography that somebody is paying for, permits included. A sitting in Hounslow is best built around Lampton Park, and the useful thing about it is having somewhere to walk to. In a park that gets steady use, frames are spoiled less by other people than by the camera being locked in one direction to keep them out of shot, and having room to move means the direction can be picked for the light instead. Turn the lens back towards the open half of the sky and the face fills in evenly; turn it towards the tree line and the sky behind becomes a bright edge that the eye goes to first. Season shifts this further than the forecast does. Under full summer leaf the ground beneath the canopy breaks into hard patches of light and shadow, which lands across a face in a pattern that no later correction removes, so on a clear day in July the sensible place is out on the open grass with the sun low, or not there at all around midday. From November the canopy has gone, light drops straight down onto the grass and paths, and the whole park photographs cleaner and colder; a bright overcast day in winter is close to ideal. Clothing follows the background rather than the season. Green surrounds a sitting here for much of the year, and green reflects up into skin, so mid greens are the one colour to leave at home. Warm neutrals, deep blues, burgundy and charcoal all separate from foliage. Long sleeves hold a shape that bare arms will not, and something plain beats a pattern that competes with leaf detail for attention.
