Clothing works best when the colours sit near each other without anybody matching outright. A family session in Hounslow points at Lampton Park by default, and the first decision is not where in it to photograph but where to leave the car. It is the largest park in the borough, which is a real advantage for pictures and a real problem for a pram, a toddler on foot and a grandparent who does not want a hike before anything has been taken. Where distance is a factor we agree a meeting point at the near end and work within a few minutes of it, rather than aiming for the best corner and arriving with everyone flat. Ground surface settles the rest. Mown grass takes small wheels well enough when it is dry and not at all once it is wet, so through the winter months the route runs along made paths and the family steps onto grass only for the frames that need it. If anyone in the group cannot stay on their feet for long, a bench is worth building the session around. Sitting a whole family down and photographing them from slightly above works better than it should, and it puts every face on one level. Small children give about twenty good minutes and the running order should reflect it. Everyone in one picture belongs at the beginning, while the youngest child is still watching us rather than the dog on the far path, then the adults, then whatever the children do once they have stopped performing. When wind, rain or the dark end of winter makes all of that pointless, the Northwood studio produces the same pictures indoors, weather removed.
