The deer are the fact that shapes every dog session in Richmond Park, and not for the reason people expect. Recall that has never failed at home fails the first time a dog sees a herd move, so loose running is a decision made on the day, on ground where nothing is grazing, rather than something assumed before we arrive. Everywhere else we would work a long line, slack and trailing, and keep it out of frame by standing further back with a longer lens. Coat colour then decides the exposure. Winter grass is bleached almost white and a black dog against it is easy to see and hard to expose: meter the field and the animal comes back as a cut-out with no fur in it at all. We read off the coat instead and let the grass go bright, which keeps the texture along the ribs and the shine on the muzzle. Pale dogs want the opposite and want cloud. Water goes last in the running order, never first, because a coat that has been in a pond does not come back inside the session, and everything photographed after it looks like a different dog. Ground under old trees tends towards root, rut and hollow rather than lawn, so an animal that is stiff or elderly is better kept on open grass close to where you came in, in short spells, with the camera coming down to the animal rather than the animal being called about.
