Most dog sessions are finished inside forty minutes, because that is roughly how long the good attention lasts and everything after it looks like work.
The camera goes down to eye level with the animal, which means kneeling in whatever the ground happens to be that day. You get the edited set back in colour, plus mono where a dark coat reads better without it. A lead can stay on the whole time and be removed at the edit, so nobody has to gamble on recall beside a road.

Water is the first decision in a Kingston pet session and it is a question of order, not of place. Canbury Gardens runs along the Thames, and a dog that swims comes out of it a different animal: the coat lies flat, all the texture goes, and it reads two shades darker than it did ten minutes earlier. So the portrait frames are made first, on dry ground, and the river is saved for last. Do it the other way round and there is nothing left to go back to. Coat colour then decides where the animal stands. Open water is the brightest surface in the frame on any day with cloud about, and a dark dog placed between the camera and the river simply loses its face, coming back as a flat shape with nothing readable in it. Putting planting or the far bank behind the dog instead gives a tone near enough to the coat to work against, and the bright water is kept for the wide frames where a silhouette is what we want. Nervous and older animals are better off well away from the town centre. A market place is busy and hard underfoot, with strangers passing at close range, and a dog that is already unsure will not settle in it. The gardens are quieter, the surface is kinder to stiff hips, and the session can run at whatever pace the animal sets. Bushy Park is a short distance away and earns its travel only for a dog with reliable recall that needs to run flat out.
