Commercial work in Kingston divides by where the premises sits. Anything on or around the historic market place is in a building that was never meant to be photographed, so we arrive assuming one window wall, a deep room, and a back half several stops down on the front. Left as found, that produces a picture correctly exposed at the door and muddy at the counter. There are two honest fixes and they cannot be mixed. Either the ceiling fittings go off and the whole room is lit to match the daylight coming in at the front, or the daylight is shut out and every bit of light in the frame is ours. Half measures leave one end orange and the other end blue, and colour split across a single frame does not come back cleanly afterwards. Which way round it goes is settled before a case is opened, because it decides what has to be carried in. Team pictures raise a separate problem here. A staff list drawn from Kingston's South Asian and Korean communities covers a genuinely wide range of skin tones, and one hard setting for everybody either loses detail in the darkest face or blows out the lightest. A softer key, exposed for the darker end of the range and lifted person by person afterwards, keeps everyone looking like themselves. Since so much of the workforce commutes into Waterloo, the day matters more than the hour: better to photograph twenty people on the one morning everybody is in than return twice for the three who were not.
