Lambeth is not one trading district but a run of them, from Waterloo at the top down through Brixton to Streatham, and a business with two sites in the borough usually has two completely different rooms: different ceiling heights, different windows, different colours of light. Photographing them so they look like one company is most of the job, and it is done by fixing our own light and overruling theirs. Nearly every interior is lit twice over, daylight at the front and overhead tubes burning at the back, which puts two colours in one frame and a green tinge that will not come apart cleanly in the edit. Either the tubes go off and we build the picture from the window, or we add enough of ours to render them irrelevant. Teams are the second problem, and a borough as varied as this one is exactly where a single fixed lighting recipe falls over. One exposure does not sit the same on every face: deeper skin wants more light to hold detail on the shadow side, while paler skin under the same key washes out. What has to stay identical from one staff picture to the next is the background, the camera height, the lens and the distance to the subject. The light itself is adjusted person by person, quietly, and the finished grid reads as though everyone sat down in one room on one afternoon, which is the only thing anybody actually notices.
