Two kinds of commercial job come out of this borough and they want opposite treatment inside the same day. The financial district end wants offices shown as they are: glass, height, long sightlines, people at desks looking as though the work is real. The historic side, the streets nearer the Tower of London on the western edge, wants the reverse. Texture, brick, age, and a business shown to belong somewhere that has stood a while. The lighting problem is identical in both, and the trouble is never that there is too little of it. Modern offices carry a wall of daylight down one flank and panels burning in the ceiling, and those two do not agree on colour, so whichever the camera is set for, the other one stains everything it lands on. A brick interior has the same fight in a smaller room. The fix is to kill one of them. We switch the ceiling off wherever the switches allow it, stand our own light beside the window so it agrees with the daylight, and let the room settle to a single colour before a frame is taken. Getting a team to match up is a scheduling matter more than a lighting one. Everybody has to stand in the same place under the same setup, which means holding one room for a block instead of catching people at their desks as they come free. We write the setup down so a March starter gets an identical picture.
