Small children spend attention rather than time, and a Tower Hamlets family session is planned against that budget rather than against a clock. Victoria Park in the north of the borough is where most of them go, and the reason is underfoot: an old public park has had its main routes laid, worn and relaid for generations, so they run firm, wide and level. A pram rolls. A grandparent who is unsure on rough ground can walk the same line as everybody else instead of being left at the edge and photographed separately. The order counts for more than the location. We take whatever picture has all of you in it first, inside the opening quarter of an hour, because that is the frame that gets printed and it is also the one the youngest will refuse to repeat later on. After that the session loosens off: adults in pairs, children by themselves, then a long stretch of walking in which the camera moves and nobody is told to stand anywhere. Those are usually the frames a family still likes a year afterwards. Rain and cold are not the reason to move indoors. A baby who needs feeding and changing every hour is, and so is a toddler already worn out by lunchtime. In either case the Northwood room does the same work with less walking involved, and there is somewhere warm to sit while the session catches its breath.
