Mostly, because the session is mainly movement. In Victoria Park we walk a loop and photograph along the way, so the children have something to do besides being looked at. One arranged frame gets taken in the opening minutes, before patience drains away, and after that nobody is told where to stand. Grandparents get a bench rather than a spot out on the grass.

Tower Hamlets is home to Victoria Park, opened in 1845 as 'The People's Park' and described by the council as London's oldest public park. For families arriving by train, Shadwell has DLR and Windrush line stations, and Canary Wharf station is served by the Jubilee line, the Elizabeth line and the DLR. For on-location sessions, Victoria Park in the north of the borough is one option, while Canary Wharf and the historic Tower of London on the borough's western edge offer a more urban backdrop.

Small children spend attention rather than time, and a Tower Hamlets family session is planned against that budget rather than against a clock. Victoria Park in the north of the borough suits that well, and the reason is underfoot: an old public park has had its main routes laid, worn and relaid for generations, so they run firm, wide and level. A pram rolls. A grandparent who is unsure on rough ground can walk the same line as everybody else instead of being left at the edge and photographed separately. The order counts for more than the location. We take whatever picture has all of you in it first, inside the opening quarter of an hour, because that is the frame that gets printed and it is also the one the youngest will refuse to repeat later on. After that the session loosens off: adults in pairs, children by themselves, then a long stretch of walking in which the camera moves and nobody is told to stand anywhere. Those are usually the frames a family still likes a year afterwards. Rain and cold are not the reason to move indoors. A baby who needs feeding and changing every hour is, and so is a toddler already worn out by lunchtime. In either case the Northwood room does the same work with less walking involved, and there is somewhere warm to sit while the session catches its breath.

For a family that means your home, a garden or a park such as Victoria Park or Mile End Park, with lighting brought along for any indoor frames. Families who prefer an indoor backdrop can use the Northwood studio at 21 Joel St instead.
